Ripon’s renowned St Cecilia Orchestra is much more than just an orchestra.
At its most spectacular it is an exceptionally fine and very large symphony orchestra, often working with top class international soloists and capable of giving high-quality performances
St Cecilia is joined by local children’s choirs in Gary Carpenter’s quirky setting of four Robert Louis Stevenson poems, The Lamplighter, John Forsyth narrates Richard Shephard’s retelling of The Musicians of Bremen (a Brothers Grimm fairytale) and three vacuum cleaners and a floor polisher take to the floor in Malcolm Arnold’s Grand, Grand Festival Overture. Dukas’ magical masterpiece, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, well-known from Disney’s Fantasia, and John Adams’ exciting whirlwind of a piece, Short Ride in a Fast Machine, complete the programme.
